Overview

Some of the most successful bench to clinic translation in energy balance and cancer research occurs when transdisciplinary researchers perform parallel studies in which mechanistic studies in animal models inform clinical or population studies, and vice versa.  This conference will be a forum for discussions based on clear examples of successful parallel studies, as well as frank discussion about the level of evidence needed in animal and clinical research to compel clinical practice change.

International leaders in nutrition and exercise research, Dr. Melinda Irwin and Dr. Stephen Hursting, will deliver keynote addresses.  Four plenary sessions on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Exercise, Body Composition and Moving Energy Balance Research Toward Clinical Practice Change will be presented.  The third day will be focused on trainees and early stage investigators, and includes a Specific Aims Workshop for trainees and junior faculty mentoring session with senior faculty, and career skill building workshops available.

Confirmed speakers and session moderators can be found in the conference program to be released at a later date.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Facilitate discussion among energy balance researchers about the translation of data between animal research, clinical care & population sciences
  2. Promotion of collaborative science: Promote multi-disciplinary discussion and collaboration building
  3. Career development: Provide career development to early stage investigators via group training sessions and to mid-career and senior investigators via individual career coaching sessions

Registration

The Translating Energy Balance From Bench to Communities:  Application of Parallel Animal-Human Studies starts at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2021 and adjourns at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 10, 2021.

Conference Flyer

Registration Fees:

  1. Physician/Scientist - $150.00
  2. Student/Trainee - $75.00
  3. MD Anderson Faculty/Staff - $150.00

You will receive instructions for the Virtual program via email 3-5 days prior to the conference.  The only requirement for the online training is that you must have a laptop/desktop computer, webcam and access to stable internet connection.

CALL FOR LATE-BREAKING ABSTRACTS NOW OPEN (Abstract Flyer)

Abstracts describing work in animal models OR patients/healthy individuals related to nutrition, exercise/physical activity, and body composition at all phases of pre-clinical to community translation will be considered.  Discussion should include the potential for incorporation of parallel studies in other models (i.e. animal research based on clinical or population observations, clinical studies based on animal research, population studies based on clinical or animal data) but existence of these parallel studies is not a prerequisite for consideration.

Late Breaking Abstract Deadline:  June 1, 2021
