Call for Abstracts:

The 2027 Oncologic Emergency Medicine Conference invites the submission of abstracts presenting clinical investigations, translational research, or quality improvement (QI) initiatives that advance the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based emergency care for patients with cancer.

The conference aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, exchange innovative ideas, and stimulate meaningful discussion on the evolving role of emergency medicine throughout the cancer care continuum across academic medical centers, hospitals, and community-based settings. Submissions should contribute to advancing clinical practice, improving patient outcomes, reducing variation in care, and addressing the unique challenges faced by patients with cancer in emergency or acute care settings.

Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to prepare two versions of their scientific poster:

  • Printed Poster: A traditional scientific poster for display in the in-person poster hall.

  • Digital Poster: A one-slide PowerPoint version of their research for display in the on-site digital e-poster hall.

All posters will also be shared online in PDF format and will be accessible exclusively to paid conference registrants.

Abstract Scope and Areas of Interest

We welcome quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods studies focused on oncologic care within emergency medicine. Relevant topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Clinical Care and Management: Oncologic emergencies, sepsis, thrombosis, pain management, electrolyte and metabolic disturbances, treatment-related complications, acute symptom management, and palliative and end-of-life care.

  • Quality Improvement and Patient Safety: Care delivery models, clinical pathways, care coordination, implementation science, and initiatives to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of emergency care for patients with cancer.

  • Health Services and Outcomes Research: Healthcare utilization, access to care, disparities in emergency care delivery, cancer diagnosis in the emergency department, patient outcomes, and transitions of care.

  • Public Health, Epidemiology, and Health Policy: Population health, cancer-related emergency care trends, healthcare policy, and strategies to improve access to and delivery of emergency services.

  • Translational and Educational Research: Emerging cancer therapies and their associated acute adverse effects, evidence-to-practice initiatives, and educational interventions that strengthen the recognition and management of oncologic emergencies.

 Submission Eligibility and Publication Considerations

Authors may submit abstracts describing ongoing projects or completed research (including work presented or published elsewhere within the preceding 12 months) provided the work meets applicable institutional and publication requirements.

Eligible submissions may include original research, quality improvement initiatives, and systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis. Case reports and small case series are discouraged unless they present novel findings or meaningful clinical insights. Submissions should demonstrate scientific rigor should demonstrate clinical relevance to emergency medicine and the care of patients with cancer, with an emphasis on advancing knowledge, informing clinical practice, or improving care delivery across diverse healthcare settings.

As part of the submission process, authors will be asked to indicate whether they agree to potential publication of their abstract in the Journal of Emergency Medicine (JEM). Authors who consent to publication may be contacted after the conference to confirm authorship, author order, intellectual ownership, and institutional affiliations, as applicable.

We encourage investigators, clinicians, educators, and quality improvement professionals to contribute their work and help advance the science and practice of oncologic emergency medicine.

Join us in advancing the future of emergency care for patients with cancer.
