Overview

Adequate glycemic control in patients with or without diabetes is an essential aspect of overall of cancer care. Hyperglycemia during hospitalization is associated with increased risk of complications and extended hospital stay. This module is designed to introduce basal-bolus insulin therapy as the standard of treatment for inpatient hyperglycemia. The module focuses on the foundational concepts of basal-bolus insulin therapy which include: components of BBI, advantages of BBI over sliding scale insulin (SSI), and collaborative care strategies in the care of patients with hyperglycemia in the inpatient settings.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify the advantages of basal-bolus insulin therapy over sliding scale insulin.
  2. Identify the components of basal-bolus insulin therapy.
  3. Summarize the collaborative care strategies in the prevention and management of hyperglycemia.
