Overview
This series is a forum for the discussion of challenging and/or unique emerging infectious diseases in oncology patients, which includes microbiologic aspects of the organism and the pathophysiology of infection.  After the case is described it is followed by a discussion of clinical manifestations, diagnostic, and treatment options, including prevention.  Salient points of the infectious diseases are highlighted and serve as a clinical starting point to open discussion.  

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Manage the most difficult infections in cancer patients and assess the differential diagnosis of common and uncommon infections in cancer, based on physician consensus.
  2. Compare different approaches for diagnosis and treatment of infections in cancer patients and implement the most appropriate ones.
  3. Practice state-of-the art therapies for infections in cancer patients in an individualized manner; thus, improving patient outcomes.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
