Overview
Currently the two biggest limitations hampering the effective treatment of colorectal cancer are a general lack of effective targeted therapies, and a lack of predictive biomarkers to help the oncologist identify which individual patients will benefit from either standard chemotherapy or the targeted therapies currently in development. This activity is targeted to basic and translational scientists working on colorectal cancer, as well as physicians who treat colorectal cancer.  It is designed to capture the most up-to-date research on both the molecular working of the colon cancer cell and the clinical treatment of colorectal cancer, and present this information in a way so that knowledge from one discipline can inform the other, work together to provide optimal care. By doing so it is expected that both colorectal cancer scientists and clinicians will leave with increased insight and thus increase ability to perform their functions. It is also expected to increase research collaboration in the colorectal cancer community.

Objectives
After participating in the activity, the learner should be able to:

  1. Implement genetic testing of patients and family members to screen for those who are at risk for developing pancreatic cancer and other cancers.
  2. Evaluate, counsel and treat patients with pancreatic cancer at all stages of disease (locally advanced, resectable, borderline resectable, metastatic).
  3. Provide a comprehensive understanding of innovative and emerging cancer therapies, inclusive of the side effects, to the cancer patient.
  4. Apprise healthcare providers of emerging paradigms in latest clinical trials and supportive care.
