Overview
The National Academy of Medicine, formerly called the Institute of Medicine, recognized cancer survivors faced complex physical and emotional health problems, which are often unmet. As of January 2019, there were over 1.1 million cancer survivors living in Texas. This 5-part series provides an overview of cancer survivorship, including phases of cancer survivorship, current trends and models of survivorship care, and evidence-based practices to reduce long-term sequelae of cancer treatment and the enhance survivorship care delivered.


Objectives
At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Articulate increased overall knowledge of the phases of cancer survivorship, current trends and models of survivorship care, and evidence-based practices to reduce long-term sequelae of cancer treatment to enhance the survivorship care delivered.
  2. Identify the phases of cancer survivorship and unique problems associated with each phase.
  3. Describe current trends in oncology intended to reduce long-term sequelae of cancer treatment.
  4. Enumerate information and communication tools that enhance survivorship care.
  5. Identify care models for delivery and coordination of post-treatment care of survivors.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.                     


ABIM MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION             
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit. Participant completion data will be shared with and transmitted to the ACCME on the participant’s behalf.
