Overview

Active Living After Cancer (ALAC) is a program funded by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) that aims to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors in Texas by promoting physical activity, and by providing navigation services for survivorship issues. 

The ALAC Online Facilitator Training is a series of 13 modules that will provide an overview of your role as a facilitator and help prepare you to effectively facilitate the ALAC program.


Registration

These modules will need to be completed in sequential order. When all modules have been completed, a completion certificate will be generated and can be downloaded/printed.

To begin, click the “Register” tab to complete your registration. Once registered, click on the “View Content” tab and click “Launch Module” to begin the “ALAC Welcome Session.”

ALAC Welcome Session

This module introduces the ALAC facilitator training sessions.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  3. Discuss expectations when promoting and delivering the ALAC program.
  4. Identify safety guidelines.

This module discusses ALAC orientation, moderate intensity activities and physical fitness.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain the ground rules for the 12 ALAC sessions.
  2. Describe the benefits of physical activity.
  3. Discuss the importance of incorporating lifestyle activities for cancer survivors.
  4. Facilitate the activity for the week.

This module discusses readiness to change, goal setting, and keeping track of your progress.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Facilitate a discussion of the 5 Stages of Change.
  2. Explain the characteristics of SMART Goals.
  3. Facilitate the activity skill "Walking and Stretching".
  4. Discuss Survivorship: Talking to Your Healthcare Provider.

This module discusses the benefits and barriers of physical activity.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Facilitate a discussion on the barriers of physical activity.
  2. Explain the benefits of physical activity.
  3. Present the activity skill: resistance band and stretching.
  4. Discuss lymphedema as a survivorship topic.

Requirements for successful activity completion:

This module discusses problem solving skills.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Present and facilitate a discussion of relevant problem-solving strategies.
  2. Present and describe the IDEA tool.
  3. Facilitate Zumba as the weekly activity skill.
  4. Facilitate discussion of this session’s Survivorship topic: “Nutrition for Cancer Survivors.”

This module discusses setting long-term goals.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  3. Discuss spirituality as a survivorship topic.

This module discusses rewarding yourself.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Facilitate a discussion around the differences between internal and external rewards.
  2. Explain how physical activity can be a reward.
  3. Facilitate dancing as an activity skill.
  4. Discuss emotional well-being as a survivorship topic.

This module discusses time management.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Facilitate and present a discussion on time management.
